Americana Duo Freddy & Francine Tour Stop in Minnesota

By minnesotacountry / April 18, 2018

Americana soul duo Freddy & Francine have a show at The Warming House in Minneapolis on April 20th with Josh Harty. The pair, otherwise known as Bianca Caruso and Lee Ferris, are classically-trained singers who mix Soul, Pop, Folk, and Americana to create modern, yet timeless music; their spine-tingling harmonies, as No Depression has said, “blend like milk and honey,” a delight for the ears, and a soothing balm for the soul. Freddy & Francine will release their fourth full-length album this fall.

Little Big Town’s “The Breakers Tour” Focuses on the Songs

By minnesotacountry / April 7, 2018

When you have a great song and great talent to perform it you really don’t need anything else. Little Big Town’s “The Breakers Tour” took over the Target Center to prove just that.

The night started as people were still finding their seats. Texas natives Midland made their way to the circular stage in the middle and played a handful of their songs as the stage slowly rotated around and around. It enabled the band to see all the fans, and the fans got to see them in their head-to-toe throwback ’70s country style. It came complete with the Jennings-long hair and facial hair. The video screen by the main stage even looked to have an old-school filter on it.

They started off with night off with “Check Cashin’ Country” about the kind of songs many have to write and sing to make a living playing by Music Row’s rules. This song as well as the others gave you a full dosage of traditional country. The kind legends like Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings were known for. They got smooth with “More Than a Feeling,” their current single “Make a Little,” and did medley of classic songs such as “Jack and Diane” and “Dust on a Bottle.” They ended their set with “Drinkin’ Problem” as iPhones sprinkled throughout the stands and it turned into a giant sing-a-long.

It wasn’t long before the lights went out and you started hearing the strings on Kacey Musgraves guitar and she appeared under a single spotlight. She started singing “Slow Burn” which also kicks off her new album Golden. The rest of the band came in shortly after and it probably one of the calmer sets the Target Center has in a while.

A big arena like the Target Center where many singer put on big spectacles is an odd place to see someone like Musgraves perform, because she’s not very extroverted as a performer. She doesn’t run around too much on stage, and she’s not much for banter. But she also doesn’t need any of that, because she has the voice and songs fans love.

She has the songs fans recognize within the first 10 seconds of her strumming her guitar. She did “Stupid,” “Keep it to Yourself,” Golden standout “Butterflies”, and more. She had a few surprises, too. She brought out the Miranda Lambert hit she helped pen called “Mama’s Broken Heart,” and when she moved to the circular stage she launched into “Merry Go Round.” The iPhones lit up the arena again and everyone sang a long to a point where she just stopped and listened.

She also brought out a dance-infused version of Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Moon.” It was fitting combination as she made her away back to the main stage and ended her time with her new single and the disco-influenced “High Horse.” It even got her dancing.

As Little Big Town’s band started to play you could hear Jimi Westbrook sing the first lyrics of Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” a song they recently recorded for a compilation album. And if you only took away one thing from this concert it was probably that you’d be hard-pressed to find group that enjoys themselves on stage more than them. Except for two big video screens on stage that connected together in the back of the stage like a ‘V,’ they didn’t have a very fancy set up. But like their supporting acts, they didn’t need one.

Their catalog is full of hits and album cuts that are just as good, and pulled many of them out. They did everything from “Drivin’ Around” and “Good Lord Willing” to “Happy People,” and “Little White Church.”

As they were finishing up “Pontoon” they made their way to the circular stage in the middle and decided to strip things down. They started off with one of their earliest hits, “Bring on Home to Me,” then went into “Sober” which filled the arena with iPhone lights again, and “Your Side of the Bed.” Then they paid tribute to Prince with a little “When Doves Cry,” and when the lyrics started to register with fans they went wild. They also paid tribute to Don Williams with “Lord I Hope This is a Good Day” and Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman.”

They got back to the main stage for songs such as “I’m With the Band” where they also did a little bit of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” as well their smash-hit penned by Taylor Swift called “Better Man.” After playing a few more songs including “Tornado” and “Day Drinker,” they did “Stay All Night” which allowed Westbrook to break out his inner soul-man.

The encore started with Karen Fairchild along on the center stage and everyone else on the main stage backing her up as she sang “Girl Crush,” and within the first chords of the song the crowd went wild. They sang along through the whole and gave her one of the biggest ovations of the night. Even after the song ended she just stood there waving to the fans, blowing kisses, saying “Thank you” and taking the whole moment in.

The night ended with the song that introduced Little Big Town to the world: “Boondocks.” They’ve sang it countless times and they’ll sing it until they retire, but there was no phoning it in. You could tell they were having a blast and were giving it their all until the last note was done.

After so many years of playing theaters and supporting arena headliners Little Big Town showed they’ve earned the top spot. They don’t need a fancy stage production. They’ve got exactly what they need: world-class talent and great songs.

Chris Young Losing Sleep Tour Stop at Target Center

Over 10,000 Country Music fans descended on downtown Minneapolis this past Friday night to welcome Chris Young and his “Losing Sleep” tour. Young noted, that Minneapolis is the largest crowd the tour had seen thus far and he graciously thanked all in attendance.

LANCO warmed up the crowd with an upbeat set, showing off their hit songs “Born to Love You” and “Greatest Love Story” which brought an uproar of cheers from the crowd as they began to play. The band and lead singer, Brandon Lancaster, were eager to please the packed venue, and they did just that.

Kane Brown is a young, hot, up and coming artist in the country/pop segment of the genre. He defiantly has his own style and makes no apologies. Kane worked the stage with a cool, nonchalant stride, and eventually showed off an impressive two step as he performed an awesome segment of songs from his teen years. The heart of every lady in the house melted as his deep, smooth voice, filled the Target Center. His tattoos and muscular arms don’t hurt either.  He’s the perfect mix of Sam Hunt and Josh Turner, a country music hybrid that is racking up the hit songs that were even better in person.

Chris Young put on a great performance, charming the crowd with his smile and the best of his chart-topping ballads. “Aw Naw,” “Lonely Eyes,” and “Losing Sleep” showcased Young’s beefy, full voice as he belted out his hits, one by one. There was no denying the support and excitement the fans showed for Chris here in in Minneapolis. There were many moments when the crowd absolutely erupted in roaring cheers for him, the volume could have rivaled a Sunday Vikings game crowd. Chris showed great energy and pride for this music as he entertained the packed house for about an hour and a half. His passion and talent will have him topping the charts and packing the house for years to come.

The coolest thing about the “Losing Sleep” tour is how uniquely different the three acts are. If you are in the mood to experience a sample pack of some of the best country music acts, this show is for you.

Florida Georgia Line Super Bowl 52 Concert at Mystic Lake Showroom

Florida Georgia Line came into town to be one of the premier Super Bowl Entertainers for the weekend of festivities.  Not only were they one of the premier acts of the entire weekend, they were one of the premier acts hosted by Mystic Lake in the Mystic Lake Showroom.  And the show did not disappoint!

The entire place was rocking as soon as they stepped on stage and started their first song Anything Goes to get the party started.  They continued to keep things rolling by going into It’z Just What We Do and Round Here from their first album.

Now the cool thing about seeing FGL in the Mystic Lake Showroom is that you won’t see them playing in a crowd this size unless it’s a private party.  And this is exactly what it felt like, which made the experience even better.  Tyler and Brian were able to interact with people in the crowd more than any other show of theirs I’ve seen in the last three years.

They talked to the crowd about playing some casino games and talked about how they were up at blackjack, then down, then up again, and especially up with the crowd tonight.  They then went into another song Smooth.  After Smooth, Tyler mentioned how he saw a girl in the gym earlier and she asked him for a pic.  He responded, after I’m done working out.  Well he ended up not getting a pic with her at the gym.  But he saw her in the crowd, and the reason he told the story, and they both jumped down, went into the stands, and took a few pictures with her.  That was super cool!

The music continued after that and they asked if we minded if they play one of their newer songs and also if we’d sing along.  They broke into Meant To Be and let the crowd sing Bebe Rexha’s sections of the song.  They gave a shout out to Bebe for letting them be a part of the song and the crowd for singing along.

The duo made a comment that their manager said “We haven’t sang in front of 2,000 people since we did worship together.”  They laughed along with the crowd.  Which goes back to my prior statement that was as close to a private party with FGL as you’ll get.

FGL made some comments about Vegas Strong and all the flood victims this year.  They sang Music Is Healing and played a very touching tribute video in the background.  They transitioned into Sipping On Fire then H.O.L.Y.  Tyler joked about his daughter Liv loving that song and singing backup and dancing at their next show.  They closed out the main set with my favorite song Get Your Shine On.

They started the Encore with This Is How We Roll.  It was so loud in there you could barely hear the music.  The crowd was going crazy the whole show.  As I looked around throughout the night I think I saw less than 10 people sitting in their seats.  The night ended with Cruise.

It was a great night, great venue, and a great show!  I thought it was a serious privilege to be able to watch such a big act in that venue.  I can’t wait to see the next show there.  On a side not, the next time you’re going to a show at Mystic make sure to get there early and eat at The Meadows Bar and Grille.  The food there is great!  And is reasonably priced along with the drinks.  I’ve gone there the last two concerts now.  You won’t be disappointed!

Garth Brooks Performs Last North American Tour Stop in Nashville

Garth Brooks has been on his World Tour with Trisha Yearwood for three years now.  He chose to finish up his North American leg of the tour in Nashville.  And for good reason, as everyone knows that is the country music capital of the world.  That was the perfect place and the show did not disappoint!

Garth started the show with one of his newer singles Baby, Let’s Lay Down and Dance to get the mood started out right.  The crowd went crazy when he came out on stage and started playing.  He then went into one of his old classics Rodeo.

He stopped the music to tell everyone the rules of the show for the night.  We have two rules for the show.  He said we know you all paid your hard-earned money to hear the classics.  So, rule number one is that we’re going to play the old songs.  We’re going to sing one new song and that’s it.  Rule number two is that everyone has to sing along.  I think those are some of the best concert rules of all time!  He also said Dilly Dilly a handful of times throughout the night with the crowd obliging every time and saying it back.  It was great!

Trisha came on stage halfway through the show and she opened up with American Girl.  She played a few songs and ended her set with She’s In Love With The boy.  Trisha sounded, and looked, great like always.

Garth started the second set with Shameless.  During this set he talks about all his band members, most of them have been with Garth for 10+ plus years.  A couple have even been with Garth from the beginning.  He let Robert sing Shout, which was a great performance.  Garth closed out the main set with Friends In Low Places, adding in the always fantastic third verse.  And ended it with The Dance, one of my favorite songs of all time.

None of us knew what exactly to expect when he came back out for the encore.  He started with one of his favorite songs Mom.  He said I see your signs to the crowd and proceeded to show as many as he could on camera and asked people what song they wanted to hear.  One person said New Way To Fly, Garth said he would try to remember it, but if it sucks, forgive me.  He found one sign by a person named Danielle and it said she had survived stage 3 cancer.  Garth asked her some personal questions about her chemo treatments and how she was doing.  He played Red Strokes for her.  It was a very cool thing to see.

Garth then finished up with a cover of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Fishin’ In The Dark.  He asked everyone to sing along and I think every person in the crowd followed his lead.  He ended the show with a great version of Standing Outside the Fire.  It was a fantastic show!

Chris Young opened for Garth and he did a great job.  He said he watched a Garth show with his dad when he was a kid and now his dad gets to see him open at a Garth show.  It was a very cool moment that I’m sure he and his family are very proud of.  He ended his set with his latest single Losing Sleep.
