We’re not here to say goodbye. We’re here to make memories. – Johnny Van Zant

By minnesotacountry / October 9, 2018

The opening line of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic song “Free Bird” reads, “If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?”  If the band was truly looking for an answer on Friday they got it from the 11,000+ crowd at Excel Energy Center.  Skynyrd treated the audience to what was nothing shy of a greatest hits performance and every attendee went home with “memories” of the greatest Southern Rock band of all time on their last stop ever in the North Star State.

Earlier this year, Lynyrd Skynyrd announced they were going to stop touring and announced dates for their final tour; “Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour”.  The original schedule did not include a stop in Minnesota but as luck would have it, a final date in St. Paul was announced.

The band has seen numerous lineup changes over the years since the tragic plane crash in 1977 leaving only Gary Rossington as the last remaining original member.  But if you asked anyone at the nearly sold out crowd on Friday they didn’t care.  That was Skynyrd on stage and a Van Zant was behind the mic.

Skynyrd’s 17 song set featured every 70’s classic hit they ever recorded.  The three guitar lineup of Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke and Mark Matejka and Van Zant’s vocals kept the St. Paul crowd on their feet for the entire 98 minute show.

The night started out with their 1973 hit “Workin’ for MCA” then quickly rolled into their 2009 song, “Skynyrd Nation”.  It was as if they wanted to show the range and years this band has captured.  The rest of the night was dedicated to all the classic hits the band is best known for including “Simple Man”.  During the song the crowd was treated to clips of home movies on the video wall of band members who are no longer with us including the great Ronnie Van Zant who died tragically in the band’s 1977 plane crash.

The night was capped off with Skynyrd’s two best known and timeless hits, “Sweet Home Alabama” and an unbelievable 12 minute version of “Free Bird” featuring an amazing three guitar jam.

If this is truly Lynyrd Skynyrd’s last ride they definitely did what they set out to do.  They made “memories” and lasting ones at that.

Unpretentious Pop Perfection – Justin Timberlake’s Man Of The Woods Tour

By minnesotacountry / October 3, 2018

When I think of a man of the woods, Justin Timberlake isn’t exactly what comes to mind.  The album title induces a bit of an eyeroll, actually.   I take my seat, forget about the perplexing album title and rock out to the opening act, Francesco Yates.  A young, energetic pop performer with a funk edge and somewhat familiar falsetto.  Many of the big star stadium shows I have seen recently have a DJ sans opening act which I find regrettable.  I love seeing the big guys give the up-and-commers an opportunity.

Enter DJ Fresh who hypes the crowd for no more than ten minutes. This seems like the most appropriate use of a DJ that I have seen lately.  Two gold stars so far.

The lights dim and I find myself in emergency “have to pee” mode.  I sprint up the very steep stairs in my high heels and while I’m in line for the lou the crowed goes wild.  I hear waves of screams that I later find out is each band member doing a football tunnel style entrance to the stage.  Enjoying a spotlight moment right up front.  I’m hastily zipping up and tucking in when I hear “put your filthy hands on me” and the female scream-meter pegs.

I make it back to my seat for most of the opening number.  Dancers are quite literally everywhere. The sizeable band, back-up singers and dancers along with JT himself are dressed casually.  No crazy costumes. No sequins.  The back-up singers are mesmerizing.  I am splitting time between staring at them and staring at JT.  There are five horn players, a percussionist, a drummer, two guitar players, a bass player, two keyboard players and four back up vocalists.  I especially enjoy the vocals on Man Of The Woods the title track off JT’s latest album.  This highly artistic album has not reached the commercial success of Timberlake’s past projects and includes tracks that are downright quirky.  The Man of the Woods album cuts that make it in the show have a very different feel then his past hits.

Throughout the first several numbers, Justin looks calm and commanding.  He wanders through a sprawling path of staging that covers the entire floor level.  Back up dancers follow him through his journey across the main floor faux woodland.  They look effortless and understated.

JT’s hit Suit and Tie features a 1950’s inspired swinging mic stand dance that gets a major crowd reaction.  Cry Me A River, the song about his public break-up with Brittany Spears, has the largely female crowd singing at the top of their lungs, as if they are speaking directly to Brittany herself.  Half exclaiming “WE would never do this to you, Justin”! The circular video screen dangling overhead has Justin standing in the pouring rain on the center stage.  The visuals are intense but not over the top.

Drink you Away, from his album Experience starts as Timberlake’s band meets him at the center island of the multi-sectioned stage and circles him while performing the funk tune.  This is both visually interesting and emotionally compelling.  This moment portrays a band that loves to play together.  JT reaches down to the audience and pulls up a tray of shots  and they all toast to Prince.

I’m curious if I’m the only one annoyed with the toast to Prince as it’s one of several Prince references that has already happened in this show.   Minnesota gets bombarded with prince tributes from every artist that steps foot in this state.  While JT’s is most certainly one of the better ones, to all artists out there – we don’t require you to reference the purple one on stage either musically or otherwise simply because you are in Minnesota. It’s similar to bringing up a dead relative to a grieving family every time you see them.  It gets awkward.

When JT slows it down, the majority of the crew scatters. His changes of intensity are well timed.  One includes a sloppy video screen love montage. It was cheesy and felt misplaced against the polished perfection before it.

About mid-show the crew returns to the stage and has traded their casual attire for EXTREME casual attire.  Flannel shirts, jeans, t-shirts – real man of the woodsy stuff styled by the Brawny paper towel guy himself.  They all accompany Justin at an actual flaming bonfire.   Musicians circle the fire for an acoustic jam sesh.  Justin treats us to a campfire style sing-a-long. Each of JT’s four mega-talented back-up singers has a feature song while sitting at the fire.  Justin now shows himself as the humble and supportive quarter back to his hardworking and under-credited team mates.

The show is quite busy so it is difficult to hear Justin’s voice even in the crystal-clear acoustics of the Xcel Energy Center. I enjoy the moments where the band pulls back and we get to hear JT’s famous falsetto slide from bluesy to pop and back again.

Rock Your Body hits like a storm.  The pack of dancers is unleashed, as are the laser lights.    The band and back-up singers twist and turn in every direction that their bodies allow while still doing their jobs.  Justin shows off his well-honed boy band dance skills all over the multi-location staging. This intensity drives through the next two songs and climaxes with Can’t Fight The Feeling, Timberlake’s multi-generational hit.  JT finishes the show with an acapella section of the chorus alone on stage.  An obvious good-bye with no room for an encore.

Personal and unpretentious, Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods tour gave all the pop excitement the crowd expected paired with moments of musical interest and intimate moments.  The ebb and flow between the star and his super-sized crew was impeccably designed and flawlessly executed.   JT’s laid back, authentic style could rival today’s top male country artist in their relatability to the crowd.  This show is as down to earth and real as it gets from a super star of Timberlake’s status.  Justin may be the star quarterback of his team on stage, but the audience was the clear winner tonight.

Taylor Swift Puts on an Amazing Show at US Bank Stadium

By minnesotacountry / September 1, 2018

When the state of Minnesota claims it “Taylor Swift Day” you know what you are about to encounter is going to be epic, and it was just that!  The noise level coming from U.S. Bank Stadium last night for Taylor Swift’s “Reputation Stadium Tour” was something I have never experienced before. A concert that truly was for all ages.

The night started as people were still filling in their seats. British icon Charli XCX made her way to the stage and got the crowd going for the night. There really wasn’t a bad seat in the house.  She had great stage presence and had a very energetic vibe.

She started out with her hit “Boom Clap” which got everyone on their feet. And to keep the crowd alive she proceeded with “I Don’t Care”. She closed with none other than “Fancy” which was the perfect way to set the stage for Camila Cabello who also rocked the stage.

The energy continued with Camila working the crowd with her hit songs “Never Be the Same”, “Real Friends” and closing out with a crowd favorite “Havana”. This was my first time seeing her perfume and I know it won’t be the last.

Now on to the part that everyone is most excited about. Miss Taylor Swift, herself! The excitement level that was going on in U.S. Bank Stadium when Taylor came out is unreal. I have been to a lot of concerts and she brings entertainment and energy to a whole new level. Her voice, her stage presence, her dancers, and the way her stage was set up was all on point. She opened with “Ready for It” which couldn’t have been a more perfect song to open with. The pyrotechnics were “lit”. She was bringing the heat in all areas of the stadium. Not only could you feel it but she made all of her fans apart of the show with light up bracelets that were synced up to each song, these were handed out to each individual when you stepped through the door. It was something I never experienced at a concert before, to look around and see the bracelets light up to the beat of the song she was performing. Very cool.

She did a really good job of engaging all her fans by working every area of the stadium. I can’t brag enough about how amazing her stage presence is. She did a good mix of her new, her old, her upbeat and even captivated the crowd with her heart-felt ballads.

I understand why she is such a good role model to all individuals. She came off very genuine when she talked about her fans, her band and her life experiences. Just by listening to her you know she appreciates what she has and everyone that has helped her get to where she is.

Overall the “Taylor Swift Reputation Stadium Tour” experience gets a 10 out 10.

Sugarland Gets the Fair Rocking with the First Country Act of 2018

By minnesotacountry / August 31, 2018

Friday night featured some of country music’s most talented acts at the 2018 Minnesota State Fair
Photos are courtesy of Adam’s Travel Photography

The evening started out with 29 year old Canadian Lindsay Ell showcasing her amazing guitar skills and vocals to the packed Minnesota crowd. Like most openers, her set was limited to five songs including her hit, “Wildfire”.

The baton was then passed to Frankie Ballard. The 35 year old former Michigan native thrilled the audience with a number of his top ten hits. His throwback look included rolled up jeans and as he pointed out to the crowd, Red Wing boots.

The night however, belonged to country music super group, Sugarland Their “Still the Same Tour” setlist played like a greatest hits album with the 12,000+ crowd singing along to every classic song including Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy”.

Luke Bryan Performs at PNC Music Pavilion

Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country Tour 2018 made a stop at the PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, NC on Friday, June 29, along with special guests Morgan Wallen and Jon Pardi.

Morgan Wallen started out the show and got the crowd energized by playing some of his own music and hit songs that he has written for other artists.  He ended the set with his popular hit Up Down (Feat. Florida Georgia Line).

Next up was Jon Pardi.  The first thing he said was “Wow!  It’s hot out!”  And it was true.  The Pavilion was extremely hot for the concert.  He and his band came dressed appropriately with cutoff sleeves.  He entertained the crowd with his hits When I’ve Been Drinkin’ and Up All Night.  He played his newest single Night Shift which received a warm welcome from the crowd.  He was energizing the whole set and was a great lead in for Luke.

Luke came out blaring with Country Girl (Shake It For Me) and got the entire crowd up on there feet dancing.  He then cracked open a couple beers and drank them with the crowd.  He threw cans of beer out to the crowd all throughout the show, it was great!  Luke also brought in his own pyrotechnics which kept the show kept the show blaring all night and added a good effect to stage where he couldn’t have his whole stadium stage setup.

Luke continued the upbeat start of his show and switched over to some slower songs Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye and Most People Are Good.  He kept the crowd engaged the whole time and brought the tempo back up when he went into Kick The Dust Up.  Luke mixed in an acoustic part of the set by mixing a few songs into one.  He played a few covers, from George Strait, Tim McGraw, and Joe Diffie.  He went back into his music and ended the night with That’s My Kind of Night.  It was a great show the entire night.  I would definitely spend money to go to his tour again this summer.

PNC Music Pavilion was a great venue.  There were plenty of drink and food vendors so you never had to wait in line more than a couple minutes, which was very nice.  The same thing goes for bathrooms.  It’s not easy getting into and out of that place though since it’s pretty much one lane in and one lane out so make sure to plan for plenty of time if you’re going to a show.  Overall it was a great concert at a great venue!
